    Discussion Canister > Episode L

So I find most of these "episodes" entertaining. Yay me. Moreover, I think most other people that come here do the same. As seen by the commentary...

But, I was a little puzzled this week by "50/L". (BTW - not a fan of the roman numerals. I would suggest the author lose them). I wasn't sure how exactly the story was going since he was talking about the past and then went to the future. Anyone with me on this? I mean I liked the beginning, but the middle??

It's called a "flashback" dog. What's so hard to understand about that?
    April 21, 2006 | Unregistered Commentermichelangosclone
And the award for most comonly used slang goes to that guy above me, for the last two post's he's made!!!:)

As much as I hate to say it though, he's right. Not knowing what a flashback is is a Pickler-esqe comment. To read any book, any story, or see any movie, you'd have to be exposed to it before. So - how is that confusing then?

Alright, I'm not touching this "has to know" issue at all. I don't watch idol and don't care about it to be honest. What I will say is that as a reader, I didn't find it confusing. I thought it was pretty straightforward about how he approached it, and how he got out of it. I found that he went in clearly, and came out clearly. HE needed the info from his past, explained his past, and got it for us. Easy in, easy out. Easy to understand, and for me, likeable.

    So like Idol!!!

The comment - not the story.

The story: straightforward. I found no trouble following it at all. I'm not sure what the lead on this thread is saying, honestly.

And what's wrong with Roman numerals??????!?!??! SPQR baby!!! Bring it CMLLLMC!!!
    April 21, 2006 | Unregistered Commenter<publius>
How did you do that? And by that, I mean not make your name appear?

As for the numeral issue, I find it to add to the general silliness/whimsy here. No issues for me.
    April 21, 2006 | Unregistered Commenterche(walks)
haha. I didn't even know I would do that. My normal forum name is <publius>, and when I entered that here, you saw the results. Cool, huh?

    Ah, I see. Interesting.

    Or rather, <now I see>.

Great. You guys are cool. Back to the debate. I found the post to be good, and descriptive. I liked the point where he was talking about the underbrush of memory - isn't that the truth about life and needing to know things later?
    April 21, 2006 | Unregistered Commenterbilleyer
The interesting thing, I think is that the author really doesn't use flashbacks ever, if at all. I found the use in this story quite effective - normally, its just a straightforward present tense version. I don't see any problems, or any diruption. So - not sure what the thread starter meant exactly.
Nah, this is where the point begins for discussion purposes. I have to disagree about the author never using flashbacks. If you go back to one, then you see that all of this is just one large flashback on his life. It's told, IMAO from the perspective of someone looking back. So while things may be in the present, there really in the past, and this story, while in the present of the flashback that is the story had another flashback within it to wrap up some details of the story that needed to be contemporanous. But it was well written, and interesting, and funny - so despite the issue of flashing back, no worries!

    *whoa*

If that doesnt burn your noodle trying to conceptualize what exactly the last poster or author may intend, I dont know what does.

I've got some theories on 2up. But I'm not going to get into it now. I like the roman numerals. It's very whimsical - goes with the whole feel of the site. What I have to say though, is that I like the last 48-50 thread - indeed, all of the college thread. Maybe someday, I'll be bored of it, but for now, I find it eminently amusing, and has a good grasp of the american experience. Yah!
    April 22, 2006 | Unregistered Commenterpoweringup!!!
its got that whole typical american hollywood life story reminisnece to it, that's for sure. i can see how people would like it, but college isnt everything. having said that, its a lot for some people, and influences a lot of things, so good to catch that magic somewhere.

as for the numbers - arabic, not roman.

Roman numerals are less evil than regular numerals people. Doens't anyone watch TV in the last year. Numbers are the new villains!!!

Alright, in all seriousness. I think that if you're a guy, like me, then you're rememberances of college are about you're friends - and the good times you had during those four years. That's why I like these posts. They have that real quality of time spent doing absoltuely nothing that made college what it was! Go LA!
    April 23, 2006 | Unregistered Commenter(4-15-16....)
For those of us who don't spend all day watching tv - or commenting about it, I'll agree on a more simple theory. I like the roman numerals. No need to conform if you don't have to.
    April 24, 2006 | Unregistered Commentercrtchrcktmstr545
I like the whole college thread, but to summarize what was said up above, look at the voice of the main character. it's clearly someone looking back on their life, ala memoir, so the flashback genre is appropriate.

Maybe we should call this with that in mind a "blovoir"

    :)
    April 24, 2006 | Unregistered Commenterlris644
I like the flashback - I find it a new - and in some respects, refreshing way to tell the story. I feel that a lot of the story is wasted with only present tense. I would prefer more of the flashbacks, to be brutally honest. AT least things would be more different, sometimes. But overall good.
